- Abstract
Free amino acids were determined quantitatively in serum from the fasting blood of 37 healthy men (ages 25-50) and 38 women (ages 20-50). 10 of the women were taking oral contraceptives, and none of the 75 subjects showed any evidence of liver damage or metabolic disturbances: Serum was deproteinised by adding an equal volume of 5% sulphosalicylic acid, and the amino acids were separated by ion exchange column chromatography. Compared with the male group, the 28 females not taking oral contraceptives had statistically significant lower values for the average concentrations of the following amino acids: isoleucine, leucine, methionine, ornithine, phenylalanine, proline, tyrosine and valine. No statistically significant differences could be found between the two female groups.
