- Abstract
This document provides a summary of recent articles from the Annals of Internal Medicine. The first article discusses a randomized trial that evaluated the effectiveness of extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) and endoscopy for treating pain in patients with chronic pancreatitis. The study found that the intervention group experienced short-term pain improvement compared to the sham group, but the difference disappeared after 24 weeks. The second article examines the use of temporal artery color Doppler ultrasound as a diagnostic test for giant cell arteritis (GCA). The study found that ultrasound served as an effective initial test, but further testing was still required for 46% of patients. The third article presents a grand rounds discussion on managing patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The discussion covers screening for CKD, approaches to prevent CKD progression, and the role of novel agents. The final section highlights the findings of several randomized controlled trials on topics such as community-acquired pneumonia, Enterobacterales bacteremia, stroke or transient ischemic attack, diabetes and myocardial outcomes, and atrial fibrillation.
