- Title
Regional Dress: Between Tradition and Modernity.
- Authors
Hopkin, David
- Abstract
Because such events drew people from across the region, costume became a marker of geographical identity; especially women's costume, as men were more likely to be identified by occupational dress. However, as Hume argues, such costumes were not static but developed, either in harmony or opposition to what she terms "cosmopolitan dress", as local dressmakers learnt about new fabrics and fashions. Despite occasional glances towards Brittany and southern Germany, Sara Hume's study of regional dress is focused on Alsace.
