- Abstract
We are often said that our so limited knowledge of Byzantine folk-lore depends on intonation of middle Greek literature, which consists in texts largely devoted to 'high' aspects of human life: texts concerning theology, rhetoric, and history of the imperial power are not much fond of popular traditions. This is true, of course, but the taste of Byzantine literature is not the only responsible for such a situation, as probably autocracy undertook to delete folk-lore features or assimilate them to official proceedings: that's to say, Byzantine folk-lore was reduced first in political history, then in our sources. Evidences for our assertion are very rare and problematic, but not inexistent. For instance, we could observe the development of a characteristic feature of political life in Byzantium, the so-called 'triumph of infamy', a former urban folk-lore practice which in late centuries was absorbed to imperial action.
