- Abstract
This article discusses the return of the musical instrument the lituus, which is the first time since the year 1709 that human beings have heard it. Scientists in Scotland have helped build two litui for performances of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach's cantata, which is the only known song with parts for this horn. Based on the Bach score, Ph.D. student Alistair Braden used a computer program he'd written to design the lituus's pitch, tone, and timbre. The Schola Cantorum chorus in Basel, Switzerland used the two litui designed by Braden to give a performance of Bach's "O Jesu Christ, meins lebens licht," which was the first authentic performance of the song in centuries.
