An essay is presented which examines the presence of Zen Buddhism in the haiku of poet Richard Wright. It says that Wright's novella "The Man Who Lived Underground" depicts his idea about Zen because it was written based on the religion's state of mind. It notes that Wright's interpretation of African philosophy was also similar to the teachings of Zen Buddhism.
