- Abstract
We studied the population dynamics of the Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus r. ruber) in three habitats of Río Máximo Fauna Refuge, Cuba, during October and November 2002 and from January to July 2003. The activity pattern of this species was studied in July, using the scan sampling technique. The mean population size was lower during the non-breeding season (169.0 ± 49.3 individuals) than during the breeding season (486.7 ± 117.2 individuals). The population of the study area varied from 160 to 1884 individuals. The maximum number of flamingos was observed in July, representing approximately 2% of the breeding population recorded in 2003. The main activities during the study period were foraging (48.6%) and resting (32.1%). The highest concentrations of flamingos were observed on the estuary (437.5 ± 32.8 individuals/flock; range = 200-850 individuals), where they devoted more time to resting and preening. Mudflat and dead mangrove habitats were important foraging sites for flocks of less than 150 individuals.
