- Abstract
In many parts of the world, including South Africa, teachers are facing new challenges due to rapidly increasing numbers of language and culturally different learners in their classrooms. The teachers are compelled to teach through a language they do not know well. The effect of this is that many teachers cannot cope with this situation as they lack the knowledge and skills to deal with such classroom contexts. Without a high level of linguistic confidence in the instructional language, teachers cannot adequately develop their learners' basic communicative skills or their cognitive ability in that language. There remains a gap in the research on young learners' experiences in today's multilingual and multicultural language classrooms. It is this gap in the research that this chapter aims to address. This chapter concludes that teachers commend the use of learner's home language as language of learning and teaching of the school, due to diverse linguistic backgrounds of teachers and learners, home language was not used effectively in classrooms, code switching to English was dominant, parental involvement was disappointing due to their lack of home language proficiency and teaching materials were mainly in English. This chapter recommends the review of the language of learning and teaching policy and provision of multiple medium classes to accommodate language diversity.
