- Title
Jewish Anti-Christian Invectives and Christian Awareness: An unstudied form of interaction in the Early Modern Period.
- Authors
Deutsch, Yaacov
- Abstract
The article looks at a 16th-century German anti-Jewish text known as the Verzechnuß which purported to describe Jewish anti-Christian rituals, curses, and invective. According to the author, the text illustrates the complexity and ambivalence of Christian Hebraism during this time. It is suggested that Christians' growing interest in Jewish texts and rituals sometimes fed into concerns about Jewish hostility towards Christianity. The authorship and accuracy of the text is discussed.
