- Abstract
The article discusses the results of the gemological examination of a 642 ct opaque, banded, yellow-to-brown white sample of an elephant pearl, conducted at the Dubai Gemstone Laboratory in United Arab Emirates. A near-parallel white banded structure is displayed by the sample when viewed from the sides. The thin wavy white bands in the sample indicated the appearance of a molar tooth structure from an Asian elephant. Spot refractive indices ranging from ~01.5 to 1.55 and a hydrostatic grade of 1.91 were revealed through standard gemological testing. Calcium and phosphorus were detected as the main components of the sample. The presence of trace elements, including manganese, zinc and strontium, were also detected through energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence chemical analysis.
