- Abstract
The article presents information on a glass-filled synthetic ruby. The East Coast laboratory of the Gemological Institute of America was requested to identify the 12.84 carat red oval mixed cut in figure 22. Standard gemological testing results were consistent with the published values for ruby. However, upon examination with magnification and immersion in methylene iodide, it was revealed that the specimen was heavily fractured in an unnatural honeycomb pattern similar to what is typically seen as a result of quench crackling. The fractures appeared reflective and showed a blue flash effect at higher magnification, which is a common feature of glass-or resin-filled materials.
