- Abstract
A 16-year-old boy sustained a penetrating wound of the right neck 3 years and 5 months ago, which caused an arteriovenous fistula between the common carotid artery and internal jugular vein. Venous and arterial aneurysms developed between the fistula. As to any systemic effect of this lesion, slight heart palpitation was noticed during walking. Serial retrograde carotid arteriography clearly demonstrated the pathologic condition; the method is superior to single carotid arteriography when considering surgical treatment. Operation was carried out under mild hypothermia (rectal temperature, 30° C). The aneurysm of the common carotid artery was resected with the fistula and arterial continuity was restored with a Teflon graft, while the opening on the venous side was closed and venorrhapy was carried out. Post-operative angiograms showed patency of reconstructed blood vessels. The patient has had no complaints since operation.
