- Abstract
The article traces the history of the Formula Translator (FORTRAN). The first documented delivery of the FORTRAN I compiler for the IBM 704 computer was in April 1957. One of the advantages of FORTRAN compilers is efficiency. Since 1970, the British Computer Society (BCS) FORTRAN Specialist Group has been a British focus for the development of FORTRAN. The year 2007 is the 50th anniversary of the release of the first FORTRAN compiler as well as the 50th anniversary of BCS.
