- Title
Active Participation and Listening to Gregorian Chant.
- Authors
Mahrt, William
- Abstract
The article presents the text of a speech delivered by William Mahrt at the Church Music Association of America (CMAA) Fall Pilgrimage on September 25-26, 2009 in Washington, D.C. It cites the Second Vatican Council's reiteration that the sung form of the Catholic Church liturgy, whose sung form's foundational music is Gregorian chant (GC), should be given priority. The author shows that the singing of GC is completely compatible with active participation, in part because listening to and singing chants are inevitably linked.
