- Title
Ethnographic and Narrative Frontiers: The Case of Gaskell's Mary Barton.
- Authors
Buzard, James
- Abstract
The article presents literary criticism of the book "Mary Barton" by Elizabeth Gaskell. It discusses the contributions of 19th-century novelistic conventions to 20th-century ethnography. Particular focus is given to the relationship between the narrator and characters in Barton's novel. According to the author, Gaskell's depiction of the British proletariat shows them to have a separate culture from that of her audience which is markedly different but also recognizably human and civilized.
