- Abstract
This article discusses critical issues and questions associated with science curriculum reform for the purpose of establishing a research agenda. It is premised upon the belief that science curriculum reform ought to be based on research and evaluated by research. It is asserted that science curriculum reform must involve fundamental changes in course content, modes of instruction, teacher education, student assessment, as well as the research process. These reforms will require partnerships among curriculum developers, scientists, researchers, teachers, learners, community members, and school administrators if the reforms are to be effective and systemic. School science ought to ensure that all students construct similar outcomes for interpreting the world. Presently, students are offered different types of knowledge by means of ability grouping and tracking. This leads to unequal learning opportunities and the creation of a scientific elite. Disenfranchised students are effectively prohibited from participating in the practical, social, and political dimensions of science.
