- Title
How Next-Generation Sequencing Could Save the Tasmanian Devil.
- Authors
WYLIE, FIONA
- Abstract
The article examines how next-generation sequencing (NGS) can address devil facial tumor disease (DFTD) threatening Australia's Tasmanian devils. An overview of the disease is provided as well as the effect of the low levels of genetic diversity in the devil population. The use of new sequencing techniques is discussed starting with the examination of micro-ribonucleic acids (RNAs) in tumor samples from devils, and the sequencing of transcriptomes of tumor and testis. Results are presented with the match with genes controlling nerve fiber myelination.
