- Title
Does harvesting the hamstrings for ACL reconstruction impair the muscular function of the knee joint?
- Authors
Eriksson, Ejnar
- Abstract
The author offers opinions on the use of hamstring tendons rather than the patellar tendon in anterior cruciate ligament transplantation surgery. This procedure has increased dramatically, and has led to debate as to whether the hamstring harvest would impair the muscular functions of the knee joint in any way. Research conducted on the question has so far failed to show any such impairment. The author notes the largest studies have been on young athletes, with no data on how their knees functioned before the surgery. He calls for further research on the issue.
