In this article, the author reflects on problems encountered while removing instruments for studying microbes under biological containment from laboratories for servicing at the Integrated Research Facility (IRF), operated by the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in Maryland. Topics discussed include the designation of the laboratory as biosafety-level-4 (BSL-4), the views of microbiologist says Lisa Hensley on the topics and problems due to automation.
