- Abstract
Introduction: Advances in research and technology have continually improved the treatment and care of critically ill and prematurely born newborns. However, mortality in this age group remains high. Neonates who have an irreversible disease or are in a terminal state have the right to holistic care from nursing professionals who must have the knowledge and skills to provide quality palliative care and achieve a dignified death. Objective: Determine the relationship between knowledge and palliative care practices in neonatal nurses in public hospitals. Methods: Cross-sectional correlational study. The sample consisted of nursing professionals; nonprobabilistic convenience sampling was used. Two questionnaires were applied: Knowledge of neonatal palliative care and Practice of neonatal palliative care, developed by the authors based on the Theory of the Quiet End of Life and the Pediatric Palliative Care Manual. Results: 38 nursing professionals were included; 55.3% presented a medium level of knowledge about palliative care and 71.1% presented a medium level of practice. It is concluded that there is a high positive relationship (Spearman’s r 0.727). Conclusions: There is a relationship between what is known and what is practiced, however, it has been found that nurses know very little about the spiritual aspect dimension and are not clear about the definition of neonatal palliative care.
