- Abstract
The translated epistle titled Meseletü'l-uluvv ve'n-nüzûl fi'l-hadith was written by İbnü'l-Kayserânî al-Makdisi (d. 507/1113) on the subject of âli and nazil isnâd. At the beginning of the work, the author gave place to some narrations about hadith and the virtues of the people of hadith. Later on, he moved on to the subject of "ali and nazil isnad" in the science of hadith. He stated that the muhaddis praised the âli isnâd, denounced the nâzîl isnâd, that there were five degrees of the âli isnâd, and explained them by giving examples. While explaining the degrees of âlî isnâd, he also mentioned the tabaqah of the tabiîn and hadith imams. According to our research, this fivefold division of the âlî isnâd was first made by İbnü'l-Kayserânî. Later, Ibn al-Salah and some other hadith writers followed him with some changes. The epistle was verified by a researcher named Salâhuddin Makbûl Ahmed on the basis of the manuscript copy registered with the number 4515 in Damascus Dârü'l-kütübi'z-zahiriyye in 1981 and was published by Mektebetu İbn Taymiyye in Kuwait and was also verified by Ahmed Ferid al-Mezidi and published in 2004 by Darü'l-kütübi'l-ilmiyye in Beirut. This translation is based on the copy verified by Salâhuddin Makbûl. Further explanations on the subject were made in the footnotes and some titles were added in square brackets.
