- Abstract
This cohort study evaluated the prevalence of masked hypertension in a middle-aged population and its association with cardiovascular disease manifestations. BP data for 5057 individuals aged 50-64 years who were participating in the SCAPIS study were analysed. Office and home BP were measured using the semiautomatic Omron M10-IT oscillometric device. 4122 individuals who were not taking any antihypertensive medication were included in the analysis; 63.9% of them had sustained normotension, and 4.2% had masked hypertension. Compared with participants with sustained normotension, those with masked hypertension were more often male (66.9% vs 46.2%; p<0.001), had higher mean pulse wave velocity (9.3 vs 8.3 m/s; p<0.001), and were more likely to have a coronary artery calcium score ≥100 (OR 1.65, 95% CI 1.02-2.68; p=0.040).
