- Abstract
The article discusses the concepts of the separation of church and state and disestablishment, and resistance to late-18th century antislavery movements in Virginia, largely led by British Methodist minister Thomas Coke. It also examines the philosophy of political elites in Virginia such as Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, and their views on religious establishment, and the religious establishment clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
