- Title
Japan's Showa Retro Boom: Nostalgia, Local Identity, and The Resurgence of Kamadogami Masks In the Nation's Northeast.
- Authors
THOMPSON, CHRISTOPHER S.; Thompson, Christopher S.
- Abstract
The article looks at the resurgence of themes and products from the mid-1950s, known in Japan as the Showa 30s, in Japanese popular culture. Particular focus is given to Kadogami (Hearth Deity) masks in Japan's Iwate and Miyagi prefectures. According to the author, many modern Japanese people are attracted to ideas and values associated with the masks, including genuineness and community, which they perceive as missing in their own lives. Details related to economic and political conditions in Japan and their effects on multiple generations of Japanese people are presented. Other topics include nostalgia, social norms, and Japanese folklore.
