- Abstract
The paper looks at the definitions of the subject and the predicate as the key concept of syntax which are the basis for the study of grammar of both mother tongue and foreign languages. Apart from their indisputable syntactic relevance, these concepts should also be studied in terms of their representation in the curricula, given that they are taught in three consecutive grades of the first cycle of primary education, and are further analysed in the cycles following the first one. The main goal of this paper is to shed light, by means of a thorough excerption, on the components of the textbook definitions and their function in the development concept of the in-class interpretation of the basic syntactic terms - the subject and the predicate - as well as on the functionality of the sentence examples that illustrate them. As the selected components (term, hierarchical characteristic, structure, function) are not formally included in the curricula, they appear in textbooks sporadically and randomly, in textbooks written by different authors for the same grade, or in textbooks written for consecutive grades. Given this fact, more precise definitions of these components in the future curricula could improve both the quality of textbooks and the teaching of syntax.
