- Abstract
The article discusses portrayals of Judaism and Jewishness in the adolescent fiction of American Jewish author Judy Blume. Specific focus is given to the novels "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" and "Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself." The authors provide a history of the development of Young Adult fiction in the U.S., and address notions of author intent and reader perception to analyze Judaism in Blume's novels. They also discuss Blume's role in the development of American Jewish children's literature and the reception of Blume's work by Generation X.
