- Abstract
This article addresses the problem of techniques for neutralization of deviant behaviors. They are related to the drift theory of the authors Gresham M. Sykes and David Matza, created in 1957. They develop the idea that modern society is more favorable to young people and they do not have to choose whether to behave socially acceptable or not. Rather, they are left to the current and move freely between what is allowed and what is forbidden. Interestingly, they have a wide range of techniques that help them neutralize the damage from their own deviant behavior. Gresham M. Sykes and David Matza pointed some of them: the denial of responsibility, the denial of injury, the denial of the victim, the condemnation of the condemners and the appeal to higher loyalties. Other researchers, as M. Kaptein & Martien van Helvoort, develop this idea with a model of neutralization techniques that includes not only different techniques, but sub-techniques as well. Most of them are a theme of discussion in the article.
