- Abstract
Middle ear anatomy represents a challenging task for every surgeon, mainly due to its hidden compartments difficult to explore such as sinus tympani and supratubal recess. Furthermore, understanding the middle ear ventilation pathways is mandatory for a successful reconstructive surgery. In this respect, the use of the endoscope in middle ear surgery added significant benefits. This work describes the endoscopic anatomy of the middle ear, with its anatomical variants. The middle ear folds and their contribution to the partition of the middle ear spaces are reviewed. The association between the obstruction of the main aeration routes of the middle ear and the pathogenesis of the inflammatory otological diseases are revealed. In addition, endoscopic anatomy of the round window and internal auditory canal are presented.
