- Abstract
This article aims to determine the textual functions of the noun phrases used by sports commentators broadcasting football matches on television, as well as to characterise the most representative internal structures of those noun phrases. To this end, a corpus containing three match reports has been analysed. First, six main syntactic patterns are identified: a) proper noun, b) extensional determiner + common noun, c) deverbal noun/common noun + prepositional phrase, d) deverbal noun + relational adjective, e) intensional determiner + common noun/deverbal noun, f) extensional determiner + (intensional determiner) + deverbal noun + (intensional determiner) + prepositional phrase. Additionally, noun phrases are attributed two basic macro-functions: 1) referent identification, and 2) predication. With this article we intend to contribute to the studies of sports discourse, particularly those focusing on match reports.
