- Title
Blake, Bickerstaff, and Eighteenth-Century Theater.
- Authors
Gleckner, Robert F.
- Abstract
An essay on the influence of 18th century English theater and Irish playwright Isaac Bickerstaff on poet William Blake is presented. Blake's interest in comedy and farce was apparent in his "An Island in the Moon." Given that Blake read a lot of 18th century plays and that Bickerstaff featured prominently in the late 18th century as well as his knowledge of Samuel Foote, the author argues that it is difficult to believe that he did not know of Bickerstaff's work. The connection between Blake and Bickerstaff is examined.
