In this review, the general framework of phylogeography, a multidisciplinary field, has been discussed. The examples on bird species show how glacier and inter-glacier cycles can affect the patterns of geographic variation of neutral genetic diversity in the Palearctic Region. In addition, the diversity of molecular markers used by phylogeography and recent advances of this field are also briefly discussed.
