- Abstract
The City Church St. Michael of Jena - investigation to improve the quality of room acoustic condition. The quality of room acoustic conditions in historic churches often change after refurbishment works. Unfortunately, these changes may decrease the perceived room acoustics. Such outcome was observed by the church parish after the recent refurbishment (acoustically not consulted) of the Church St. Michael of Jena in 2014. Therefore, the church parish launched an initiative in 2015 to investigate concepts to improve the room acoustics of the interior of the church for music performances, as part of a master's thesis in the course of studies 'Bauphysik und energetische Gebäudeoptimierung' at the Bauhaus-University Weimar. In order to evaluate the room acoustic conditions in the church, sound recordings from before and after the interior refurbishment were analyzed. Furthermore, detailed measurements of objective room acoustic parameters were performed in order to evaluate the current conditions after the interior refurbishment. In addition, the applicability of a statistical model was examined to develop principles of possible improvement measures. Since the realised measurements and analysis confirmed the subjective perceptions of the parish members, principles of possible improvement measures for the room acoustic conditions were developed in the conclusion of the thesis.
