- Abstract
Textbooks have an important role in school math education, in planning, conducting, and evaluating instruction. This study analyzes how mathematical communication skill elements are addressed in the secondary school math textbooks for grades 5-8 used by the Ministry of National Education in 2021-2022. In the study, the document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research approaches, was used. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive analysis method. It was concluded that the most frequently used mathematical communication skill category for all grade levels were "numeral", "image", "words", "symbol", "transition among representations" and "encouragement to discussion" categories, respectively. The most commonly used mathematical communication skill category across all domains was "numeral", while the least used varied depending on the domain: "encouragement to discussion" for Numbers and Operations and Algebra, "transition among representations" for Geometry and Measurement and Probability, and "symbol" for Data Analysis. In accordance with the findings obtained, it can be suggested to include more of the categories "encouragement to discussion" to promote active learning of students and "transition among representations" to facilitate their understanding of concepts in textbooks.
