- Abstract
The article focuses on researching the identities and the principal occupations of the founders of the credit societies that emerged during the central decades of the nineteenth century pursuant to the Law of Credit Societies of January, 1856. By taking this approach, it is possible to uncover the original source of the capital of these societies. As the banking sector took shape in the mid-nineteenth century, the majority of such people were merchants-capitalists, large property owners, nd industrialists. Also present, albeit to a lesser extent, were liberal professionals. Together, they undertook similar financial investments, and, and as a result, came to be regarded as a single group. They were the forerunners of a Spanish financial elite.
