- Title
DISPUTE WITH STOICISM IN THE PARABLE OF THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS.
- Authors
Brookins, Tim
- Abstract
The article discusses the parable of the rich man and Lazarus in the book of Luke chapter 16 verses 19 to 31. It states that the parable could be considered to share views on the issue of wealth under Cynic philosophy but also expresses resistance to Stoic ideas. It says that the parable also manifests elements of declamation that is associated with Stoic philosophy but in a subversive way. It argues that the target audience of Luke in the gospel is Theophilus and educated people that need secure faith and understand stoicism. It mentions that the examination of the parable is based on study of Ronald Hock on Greco-Roman milieu.
