- Abstract
The article presents a literary criticism of the work of French-Canadian author Philippe Aubert de Gaspé. The themes that are discussed are the seigneurial land tenure system of New France (régime seigneurial), which was established in the 17th century, and the ideas of individual liberty and equality. Works by de Gaspé that are discussed include "Les anciens Canadiens" and "Mémoires," Discussion includes the characters that de Gaspé created and modifications to the land tenure system in North America from a system that had been created in France.
