- Abstract
This text aims to characterize the articulation between smuggling and retail in the Atacama-Lípez border area (EFAL) (Chile and Bolivia). To this end, it analyzes people and goods involved in the phenomenon, highlighting the role of paseras and picoteros (smugglers) and traders in general, on the one hand, and electronic goods from local retail, on the other, reviewing the contribution of this set of actors in the dynamization of border economic flows in the area. It is observed that the commercial circuits and practices analyzed highlight local and historical knowledge and strategies, structuring themselves through routes and dynamics that challenge and friction the paradigms sanctioned by the existing state regulations as well as those traditionally used by social science for their understanding. It is concluded that the consolidation of a diffuse border spatiality in the puna allows local traders to claim power and recognition in everyday life, imprinting their own gravity on the social and economic phenomena that occur there.
