Marianne goes Multicultural: Ni putes ni soumises and the Republicanisation of Ethnic Minority Women in France.
- Abstract
The article discusses the exhibition “Les Mariannes,” which was inaugurated on July 12, 2003 at the Palais Bourbon in Paris, France in honor of Bastille Day. It notes that the exhibition was organized by the feminist organization Ni Putes Ni Soumises (NPNS) and featured photographs of young French women of different ethnic backgrounds, including women from the Maghreb region of North Africa. The author also considers the symbol of Marianne as the embodiment of the French Republic since the mid-nineteenth century and explores the theme of integrating and assimilating ethnic minorities.
