- Abstract
Formulaic words are the cliche words that have become a tradition to use in certain circumtances. These words reflect the culture and the life of the society. Formulaic words are used at meals or after meals, in greetings, birth, death, while starting to a school or at marriage. Besides, it includes appreciating against to a favor or expressing a good wish, curses told in anger, oaths and promises. In this search, the frequency of formulaic words and transition words were identified in Turkish Coursebook of secondary school (5-8) grade students. 171 formulaic words were identified and this identified formulaic words were illustrated in the context for the first time. Formulaic words have been evaluated and classified acording to their functions and meanings. Classification has been done under the headings of prayers, curses and in the formulaic words used in social,cultural realtions. In the examined student workbook of Turkish lesson , related to teaching formulaic words, there are two activities for 6TH grade students and one activity for the 8TH grade students. In order to determine the formulaic words usage knowledge of students in 8TH grade students, discourse completion test was applied and it has been determined that students know lots of formulaic words unlike the formulaic words that exist in Turkish Coursebooks. It appears that Turkish has a very rich and a wide variety of accumulation about formulaic words.
