- Abstract
Introduction: The urban environment which is characterized by a wide variability of both natural and socioeconomic parameters is considered to be potentially stressful for the development of children. Aim of the study: The aim of this preliminary study is to determine whether morphological parameters of children: body mass, height and BMI are modified by the type of urbanized environment and socio-economic status (SES) of their families. Material and methods: The study comprised 610 children aged 7-13 years (328 boys and 282 girls) examined in two different regions of Łódź: 1. Direct city centre; 2. Region placed near the biggest city park, were included into the study. Each study participant was measured for weight (kg) and height (cm) according to standard anthropometric protocol. Questionnaire examination was carried out among children and their parents. The questionnaire included information about declared allergy in child, number of children in the family, education level of the parents, unemployment rate of the parents. In order to control association between age, sex and morphological parameters the statistical analyses were based on standardized z-score values of body mass, body height and BMI. Results: The study revealed that all the analysed parameters: body mass, body height and BMI are significantly lower in children living in the direct city centre (p<0.0001). There was no difference between city regions in the frequency of declared allergy among children. Analysed environments are significantly different regarding the socio-economic status of families. Results of multiple regression analysis confirmed significant influence of mother education level (R2: 2.9-5.7%) and number of children in the family (R2: 1.3-2.5%) on the variability of all parameters. This variability is modified significantly also by the type of urban environment (increase of R2 to 4.0-6.8%). Analysis of variance confirmed significant interactions between standardized children height and the type of urban environment (F=3.93; p=0.02) Conclusions: The variability of morphological parameters of analysed children is significantly explained by the education level of their mothers and by the number of children in the family. This variability is also significantly modified by the type of urban environment. Further analysis of this relationship is needed.
