THE HORIZONTAL FOREARM HARP: ASSYRIA'S NATIONAL INSTRUMENT.
- Authors
CHENG, JACK
- Abstract
The article examines the horizontal forearm harp, which was the most featured musical instrument on the Neo-Assyrian palace reliefs and bronze doors. It claims that the harp has seven to nine strings and usually decorated with a finial in the shape of a human forearm. It cites the archaeological studies made by Austen Henry Layard, in which he only recognized the harp on all the decorated reliefs he unearthed in Mesopotamia or Iraq. Based on the definition of modern musicologists, a harp is an instrument with two angled arms between which are strung parallel strings.
