- Abstract
Early in Tiberius' reign, the Tiber flooded the city of Rome. Asinius Gallus proposed that it be treated as a prodigy and the Sibylline Books consulted, but Tiberius rejected his request. This paper examines Gallus' proposal and Tiberius' response. It argues that, contrary to the views of many scholars, Gallus was not attempting to undermine the new emperor but rather to support him. Through this incident, the paper explores prodigy reports in the early Roman Empire, as well as the relationship between Gallus and Tiberius.
