- Title
Is nasopharyngoscopy necessary in adult-onset otitis media with effusion?
- Authors
Dang, Phat T.; Gubbels, Samuel P.
- Abstract
The article discusses the necessity of performing nasopharyngoscopy in adult-onset otitis media with effusion (AO-OME). The authors note that AO-OME associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare occurrence outside of China, Southeast Asia and Northern Africa, based on the data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry. Clinicians are encouraged not to resort to endoscopic examination of the nasopharynx as their first step in patients with isolated OME.
