- Abstract
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are the second-most-common developmental disability in the United States, and the prevalence of ASD is increasing 10-17% annually. As the prevalence of ASD increases, martial arts instructors will be increasingly faced with the question of whether to enroll children with ASD in their dojo and how to best teach this population. This article provides a background on ASD, and, based my experiences teaching children with ASD, discusses general considerations and curriculum. Although the curriculum presented is specifically aikido based, the exercises could be adapted to any martial arts environment.
