- Abstract
Diario de una Bandera [Diary of a Flag], published in 1922, is the main work written by Francisco Franco, who was then a commander in the Spanish Protectorate of Morocco. It chronicles the military operations of the First Flag of the Spanish Legion in 1921. The book allows us a glimpse into several aspects of the future dictator's thoughts, in an earlier phase of his life, and also one that shaped his character and ideology. In addition to the detailed analysis of Franco's mentality that emerges from the book, a detailed comparison has been made of its five editions (1922, 1939, 1956, 1976 and 1986). The checking of all versions, page by page, has enabled the identification of differences between them, which show that the dictator himself did not escape the censorship of his regime, and that some content in the original version was problematic for later editions.
