- Abstract
This article offers teachers a strategy that will enable students to move easily from prewriting to the drafting stage in the writing process. The TIC TAC TOE strategy is a three-step process for writing five paragraph essays in which students fill a TIC TAC TOE board with their big ideas, supporting details, and hot words that they will later use when writing their first drafts. This strategy is designed to help students think through the early stages of their writing and though teachers must initially model its use, it is a strategy that students will be able to use independently.
