- Authors
MONTELONGO, JOSÉ A.; HERNANDEZ, ANITA C.; HERTER, ROBERTA J.
- Abstract
The article presents several teaching methods for arithmetic word problems. The authors claim that using stories to solve word problems allows mathematics to be presented as communication, a system of ideas and can be applied when interacting with the real world. A cited classificatory scheme of structures for arithmetic word problems contains basic situations defined by change, group, compare, restate, and vary. Sentence completion task and graphic organizers are also tools for solving word problems that can be classified into different classes or types while modified sentence completion tasks are deemed important in developing student awareness of expository structures in content area textbooks.
