- Authors
de Jong, Elke M. G. J.
- Abstract
This article provides an update to the 2017 European Dermatology Forum Guidelines on scleroderma, focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of sclerosing skin diseases. The consensus addresses characteristic clinical and histopathological features, diagnostic scores, and serum autoantibodies for differential diagnosis. Part 1 of the consensus covers localized scleroderma and systemic sclerosis, while Part 2 covers scleromyxoedema and scleroedema. The article emphasizes the importance of timely diagnosis and accurate treatment to prevent irreversible damage. Collaboration with other specialists may be necessary depending on the subtype of sclerosing disease. The authors provide clear recommendations and a helpful flow chart for treating physicians. The article also highlights the need for more randomized controlled trials to identify optimal treatment regimens. There is some promising evidence for the efficacy of certain tyrosine kinase inhibitors in immune-mediated sclerosing skin diseases. The author declares no conflict of interest.
