- Abstract
The aim of the present study was to analyze and assess the provision and territorial distribution of GPs and cardiologists in the six regions of Bulgaria. Territorial inequality is assessed by the concentration indexes (CI). The data is based on the distribution of the population, the number of GPs and cardiologists in the six regions. The results showed that the inequality in the distribution of GPs and cardiologists among regions is insignificant. The CIs for all of the observed years fall into the interval (-0.1; 0.1) and practically stay very close to zero. What is interesting is the fact that for six years from the period the inequality indices for GP distribution have negative values (the absolute maximum is – 0.054 for 2011). The cardiologists’ CIs have positive values with an absolute maximum of 0.061 for 2016. Another finding is that the cardiologists’ distribution differs from that of the GPs with great changeability. This is confirmed by the coefficients of variation of 1 cardiologist per 1000 inhabitants’ ratio (the maximum is 0.221 for 2012). Based on the above-mentioned results, we can conclude that the achieved equality in the territorial distribution of GPs and cardiologists at the level of the regions performs its social functions appropriately. However, we find it necessary to study in more detail the impact of the urban, rural and environment factors on the health specialists’ provision territorial inequality in smaller territory units.
