- Abstract
Transformational leadership is a concept focused on innovation and change, the first studies of which date back to the 1987s and which has been more intensively researched since the mid-2000s. In this study, it is aimed to make a bibliometric analysis of academic publications on this concept, and to examine a general view of the transformational leadership issue in the management literature from the past to the present. Within the framework of this purpose, 967 publications in the Web of Science (WoS) database containing the words "transformational leadership" were examined. As a result of the research, it was seen that the studies forming the sample were published in a period of 35 years. The majority of the studies in the field are articles with a rate of 79%. It has been observed that there is a general increase in the number of articles in the field from 1987 to 2020. It has been determined that there is a decrease in the number of publications with the year 2021, and there is a general decrease in the number of citations over the years. According to the findings, Bernard Bass's (1990) work is the most influential with 1413 citations among publications on transformational leadership in management literature. Among the current articles in the last 5 years, the most cited study belongs to Hoch et al. (2018). The most influential author in the field is Bruce J. Avalio, with 4188 citations to 13 of his publications. The most influential journal, ranked by the H index, is "The Leadership Quarterly" (10360 citations); institution, "University of Queensland" (28 publications); the country is the United States (210 publications). The most used keywords with transformational leadership were performance; transactional leadership; charismatic leadership; mediation effect and business. The main trending topics in the field in recent years are corporate social responsibility; public-service motivation; demands; organizational culture and work engagement.
